Helping Together: Supporting Children’s Access to Education and Providing Humanitarian Aid Near the Front Line

The situation for people living in Ukraine’s frontline regions remains extremely difficult. Families with children, in particular, depend on support – on things that may seem ordinary to us but can make a crucial difference there: food, hygiene products, clean water, and the devices children need to continue taking part in remote learning.
We are therefore all the more grateful for the tremendous support our donation appeal has received.

Laptops, Tablets, Computers and Monitors for Children and Young People

A particular focus of our joint aid campaign is supporting children and young people. In Marhanets and other places close to the front line, regular school attendance is often no longer possible due to the ongoing attacks. Drone and artillery attacks make both the journey to school and time spent inside school buildings an immediate danger to children. As a result, in-person classes can no longer take place in many areas, and lessons have to be held remotely from home to protect the pupils.
For many children and young people, the screen has therefore become their classroom. Lessons take place remotely from home – provided they have access to the necessary devices.
Under these circumstances, a laptop, tablet or computer is far more than just a device. It enables a child to continue learning despite the war, to stay in touch with teachers and classmates, and to experience at least a small sense of normal school life in an everyday reality shaped by war and uncertainty.
Brühl’s Mayor, Dr Marc Prokop, used his contacts at TH Köln to help arrange donations of laptops, computers and monitors. Several church communities, as well as numerous private individuals, also contributed and provided devices.
We have been deeply moved by this great willingness to help. Every donated device can give a child the opportunity to take part in lessons again, to continue learning and to stay connected with their class.

Financial Donations Become Direct Humanitarian Aid

In addition to the donated devices, we have also received financial contributions. These funds have enabled us to purchase urgently needed relief supplies. These include infant formula, high-calorie food, vitamins, water purification tablets, hygiene products and other everyday essentials.
Such relief supplies are particularly important for families, elderly people and people with health-related limitations.
Our partner organisation, “Families of the Heroes of Marhanets”, receives the relief supplies locally and ensures that they reach those who need them.

The Current Security Situation Does Not Allow for a Personal Handover

We would have very much liked to bring the collected donations to Marhanets ourselves and hand them over personally. However, due to the current security situation, we were strongly advised against doing so.
Unfortunately, the danger to the civilian population continues to escalate dramatically. Civilians and civilian vehicles are exposed to serious danger from drone and artillery attacks every day, and many people now leave their homes only when absolutely necessary.
For this reason, we decided to send the donations to Marhanets by freight instead. But even this way, the safe arrival of the relief supplies can unfortunately not be taken for granted. Just how immediate the danger is became frighteningly clear: the warehouse in Kyiv where our donations had been temporarily stored before their onward transport to Marhanets was destroyed by shelling shortly after the shipment had left.
This incident once again makes clear the conditions under which aid has to be delivered in the affected regions – and the dangers people there face every day.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We are deeply grateful to the many people and institutions who have made this aid possible – for donating computers and monitors, for financial contributions, for supporting the organisation of this campaign, and to every single person who helped spread our appeal.
Our special thanks go to Mayor Dr Marc Prokop, TH Köln, the participating church communities, all private donors, and our partner organisation in Marhanets, which receives and distributes the aid locally.
Behind every donation is a person who has decided not to look away. And on the other side is a person for whom this support makes a very real difference.

A device can give a child access to education.
Infant formula can support the healthy development of a young child.
Water purification tablets can provide access to clean drinking water.
Hygiene products and food can give people in an extraordinary situation a sense of security and dignity.

The Project Continues – and We Welcome Further Support

Because our joint campaign has worked so well and help on the ground continues to be urgently needed, we would like to continue the project.
If you would like to donate a laptop, tablet, computer, monitor or suitable accessories, we would be very grateful to receive your donation. Further financial contributions also help us to purchase the humanitarian relief supplies that are currently needed most urgently.
Every device, every donation and every form of support counts. Together, we can help ensure that more children have access to education and that families living in difficult and dangerous circumstances receive the practical support they need.
Thank you to everyone who is helping. Especially in these difficult times, this tremendous solidarity sends an important message to the people of Ukraine:
You are not forgotten.
